Eenadu write up on Sahayam


This was a write up in the Eenadu Newspaper, which brought in publicity for the centre, and there was an increase in the  number of students visiting the centre.

Sahayam Skills: A Helper Training program for Teachers 6 & 7 January, 2012

The workshop began G Angela, Counselor, Sahayam welcoming the participants for this two day workshop, thanking their college principals for agreeing to send them for this programme. 

She also gave a brief understanding on the objectives of this workshop, and affirming and encouraging them for a meaningful experience in the coming two days.   

There were 24 participants for this programme, representing 10 different colleges.  The programme was held at the Department of Journalism, Arts College, Osmania University due to unavoidable circumstances.

Dr Diana Monteiro, facilitated the session by a self introduction, wherein the participants introduced their names, and college they represent and also to which faculty they belong to. 

Diana also introduced her team, and also Sahayam team to the participants, and invited Dr Beena to share a few words with the participant. 

 Dr Beena, Coordinator for Sahayam was happy to be present, and also welcomed the participants, appreciated G Angela for her persistent efforts in interacting with colleges as well as administration and academic audit section to get the participants to join in this programme.

Dr Beena was happy that she had Dr Diana Monteiro with her team to facilitate this helping skills workshop, as she felt, that Dr Diana & her team were the right persons with a lot of experience, and affirmed the quality of the programme, she also encouraged the participants to give themselves wholeheartedly in learning the skills, so that the students benefit from their learning.  This programme was for two full days, and it was participatory encouraging the participants to role play, share, discuss, enact and also interactive.

The participants were very appreciative of this programme, and gave their comments:

Sahayam Skills: A Helper Training program for Teachers

Sahayam skills: A helping skills workshop is a training program for teachers from undergraduate colleges of Osmania University. This workshop is meant to impart helping or Sahayam skills for teachers to help their students with normal psychological and academic problems. 

 
Developing Sahayam skills is not giving advice or fixing problems, instead, it is helping the person help themselves by providing them the environment and understanding necessary to solve their problems.

This two day workshop covered the basics of adolescent development and is an intensive training in Sahayam skills. The participants learnt new skills were provided opportunity to practice these skills through experiential learning, role plays and lecture/presentations.  


The objective of this workshop was to enable participants to help students cope with problematic situations in college life and equip students with strategies and life skills.

So far we had 3 batches of Training in the year 2011.  This programme was organized by Sahayam, Osmania University's Psychological Counseling Center, Osmania University, Hyderabad.

The participants were given a certificate by Dr C Beena, Coordinator Sahayam, OU’s Psychological counseling centre, Osmania University, Hyderabad; the workshop was facilitated by Dr Diana Monteiro PhD, Counseling Psychologist and Team.  Some of the comments from the participants were as follows:


“The Session was interesting, and I got to learn a lot of things, would recommend these sessions in our college”

“I got to learn things and break my older assumptions about counseling; now I think, I will be able to help my students”

“I got more knowledge from the presentation, if given opportunity; I would like to attend the next programme”
