Sahayam Skills: A Helper Training program for Teachers

Sahayam skills: A helping skills workshop is a training program for teachers from undergraduate colleges of Osmania University. This workshop is meant to impart helping or Sahayam skills for teachers to help their students with normal psychological and academic problems.

Developing Sahayam skills is not giving advice or fixing problems, instead, it is helping the person help themselves by providing them the environment and understanding necessary to solve their problems.

This two day workshop covered the basics of adolescent development and is an intensive training in Sahayam skills. The participants learnt new skills were provided opportunity to practice these skills through experiential learning, role plays and lecture/presentations.

The objective of this workshop was to enable participants to help students cope with problematic situations in college life and equip students with strategies and life skills.

So far we had 3 batches of Training in the year 2011.  This programme was organized by Sahayam, Osmania University's Psychological Counseling Center, Osmania University, Hyderabad.

The participants were given a certificate by Dr C Beena, Coordinator Sahayam, OU’s Psychological counseling centre, Osmania University, Hyderabad; the workshop was facilitated by Dr Diana Monteiro PhD, Counseling Psychologist and Team.  Some of the comments from the participants were as follows:

“The Session was interesting, and I got to learn a lot of things, would recommend these sessions in our college”

“I got to learn things and break my older assumptions about counseling; now I think, I will be able to help my students”

“I got more knowledge from the presentation, if given opportunity; I would like to attend the next programme”
